New Learning
I had an order with YOT which ended around 5 months ago which is how I became involved in Peer-Mentoring, I was invited by Debra the Youth worker at YOT to be trained to be a mentor about 1 year ago. Debra brought in the L8R project to teach us all about the online peer mentoring, 9 of us got paid to do the training over a weekend. We had to put in 16 hours but we got paid 120 pounds. This was a good way of keeping us interested and made us feel valued. The training got us to think about all our experiences, the bad decisions we made and the feelings we had about the decisions, then we got to talk about how we would use our experiences to help other kids in trouble or at risk of getting into trouble. Since my training I have been involved in the online mentoring sessions with the young people in London based schools. I get paid for my work. Recently I and another peer mentor went to London to attend a conference relating to gun and knife crime and the general issues involving young people around the world, this was at Stretford Circus, the other mentors were there also the youth editors, actors and managers. This was our first time ever goin to London, and we travelled on our own!
It was a great experience for me and it was good to meet the other mentors. While I was there I made my point of saying that the L8R project helps young people who feel they are excluded from society to fit it. Many other people where there to show there support, hopefully that will be good to promote and advertise the project. New areas of learning for me include: Train travel to and from London, my first time on the underground.,standing upon the stage in front of all those people. First time I made a public presentation. Staying in a hotel.Learnt a little bit about myself. Reflecting on how far I’ve come in terms of personal and skill development .Recognised as a experienced peer mentor .Potential for continued involvement with a national education programme .Hearing myself on the film made me reflect on who I am.
